Ultimate Wing Chun Butterfly Swords - Full-Tang Premium Line v4 - 2019 Model

Made for Speed: These v4 2019 Lightweight Premium Line Wing Chun Butterfly Swords were made for people that prefer to fight fast and value speed. The v4 series is our "Lightweight Combat Swords". These swords start at only 610 grams each* (21.5oz) and feature a new grip texture. We kept the glossy D2 blade and the black canvas micarta handle scales. The swords have full handles.
*Actual weight varies by blade model, as a large chopper will weigh more than a small stabber blade. Below is a rough estimate of weights you can use to guesstimate the weight. These weights are pulled from the Flagship line. Domination might be slightly more, and Premium slightly less, etc: S12: 630-650 grams, S14: 715-735 grams, H12: 680-700 grams, H14: 770-790 grams, C11: 680-700 grams, C13: 780-800 grams.

These are weapon-grade swords. The blade is made from Austrian D2 tool steel, and the D-Guard from hot-drop forged AISI 304 stainless steel - one of the toughest steels possible to make D-guard from. The D2 blades have a glossy finish - something you only find on $1500+ swords since the hardened D2 steel is very hard to polish to a glossy state. All swords are made by hand and this series took over 10 months to make.

If you want the highest quality Wing Chun training swords on the market today, then look no further!

LIMITED EDITION: ONLY 3 PAIRS OF EACH MODEL WERE MADE.

Blade Steel: High-Quality Austrian Bohler D2 Tool Steel
Blade Grind: Wide Hollow Grind
Blade Sharpness: Blunt 1mm edge.

For more detailed info on what each specification means, please read our blog post: Everything Wing Chun Butterfly Swords Guide

Series: PREMIUM Line.

Blade Steel: High-Quality Austrian Bohler D2 Tool Steel OR High-Quality 440C OR a special edition steel (see specifics above)
Blade HRC: All blades are heat-treated for hardness. As a general guide for all the steels we use: D2 is treated to about HRC 58; 440C to 58 HRC for cutting performance; Damascus Steel to about 55 HRC. San Mai gets differential heat treatment because of the 2 materials. The core gets 56/58 and the outer material gets 45. It can depends on the steels, though. Carbon and Hammon is about HRC 55-57 (depends on exact steel). 420 is 54-55 HRC.
Blade Grind: Wide Hollow Grind (for better slicing) OR a Lenticular (Convex) Grind (for better edge strength) (see specifics above)
Blade Sharpness: Blunt with 1mm edge OR Sharp (see specifics above)
Blade Finish: Glossy OR Matte/Satin (see specifics above)
Blade Ricasso/Choil: These swords have a Ricasso.
Blade Fuller: These swords have a fully functional fuller (blood groove).
Blade Tapers: These swords have profile and distal tapes for improved function and balance.

Tang: Hidden Full Tang (the handle hides the full tang).
D-Guard Metal: AISI 304 Stainless Steel.
Knuckle-Bow: Flagship Rounded/Curved Slimline

Handle Material: Black/Silver Laminated Stabilized Wood (designed to prevent cracking over time). OR Black/Red Canvas Micarta (some may be Black/Silver) (see specifics above).
Handle Angle/Alignment: Straight Handle. Aligned to tip and spine for more powerful chopping and stabbing.
Handle Shape: Bellied Ergonomic.
Handle Type: Full Handles OR 2-in-1 traditional half-handles (see specifics above).
Flipping vs Trapping: Quillon is designed for both: Sword can easily and comfortably be flipped and held in a reverse grip. It also traps well.

Sword Weight: Combat Weight - Each sword weighs approx 1.7 to 2 lbs (.77-1kg) per sword. Paired swords are generally within 10 grams (0.35 oz) of each other, but because they are hand made, swords can vary in weight up to approx 50 grams in either direction. Also, the steels used and blade gride can also change the weight. This is just the AVERAGE across all the swords of this model. We also have the "Light Combat Weight" Swords were each sword weight about 200 grams less than normal combat weight swords.

Sword Measurements: Please refer to the following list, based on the blade length and shape mentioned above. And keep in mind if the blade is 13.5 inches, for example, overall length will match that:

- Hybrid 12 inch - Overall 16 3/4" inches. Blade 12 inches. Belly 2.5 inches. Base 2.25 inches. Handle 4.5 inches.
- Chopper 12 inch - Overall 16 3/4" inches. Blade 12 inches. Belly 3 inches. Base 2.25 inches. Handle 4.5 inches.
- Chopper 13 inch - Overall 17 3/4" inches. Blade 13 inches. Belly 3 inches. Base 2.25 inches. Handle 4.5 inches.
- Stabber 12 inch - Overall 16 3/4" inches. Blade 12 inches. Belly 2 inches. Base 2.25 inches. Handle 4.5 inches.
- Stabber 14 inch - Overall 18 3/4" inches. Blade 14 inches. Belly 2 inches. Base 2.25 inches. Handle 4.5 inches.

Notes: These swords are hand-made. No two swords are perfectly identical. Small variations in the measurements are typical. Please read #2 under "Things you should know" and "Not Product Defects" under the warranty for more information.

Martial Arts Grade: If you goto a normal forge to get these made in the USA, they cost about $2000 a set for the same quality. If you get them made in India or other cheaper countries they cost about $800 a set. That is wholesale cost! When we sell these swords for $500 you may feel these are top-of-the-line perfect swords, but actually they are SUPER CHEAP for the quality of workmanship and materials. There WILL be things that are slightly off on the finish or swords not matching perfectly. We know this and accept this as part of our ability to bring real marial artists swords they can use. If you want something more perfect, start looking at our "collector's grade" swords - most start around $1000-$1500.

The Premium line of swords have a few small variations from the Flagship line. The main differences are 1) The tang is a full hidden tang that runs inside the handle 2) We use a straight handle, not an angled handle. 3) Overall they are a just little lighter. Otherwise they are the same high-quality swords as the Flagship line.

There are currently multiple versions of these swords:
  • v1: The initial offering.
  • v1-PLT: A second, very limited offering made for hard training. They feature blunt D2 tool steel with a 3mm edge and a slightly rounded tip (for safety).
  • v1-T: The "Tough-As-Hell" Training line uses a hammered carbon steel that is both flexible (so the blades will not snap) and strong. Great for hard-core training. The blades are black powder-coated, and the d-guard comes in black, silver, or gold.
  • v2: This 4-Year (2015) updated offering features better handle materials, a few new blade lengths, and a few minor tweaks.
  • v3: Same as v2, but a limited run of using 2-in-1 half handles.
  • v4: Another 4-year update, released in 2019. Same as v2, but this model is "Light Combat Weight" - about 200 grams less per sword. Swords also feature textured handle scales and a 2-in-1 wooden sheath.
  • v5: 2021 update. These versions have a revamped handle that is more comfortable.
